Evil Angel was founded in 1989 by former Chippendales dancer John Stagliano after he got started acting in stag loops and shooting for other adult companies. Credited as one of the pioneers of gonzo porn, Stagliano discovered that by inserting himself into the film (often as his ass-obsessed alter-ego, Buttman), it established a deeper level of intimacy for the viewer. Evil Angel turned this new and exciting form of erotica into the Evil Empire - as the label grew to accommodate the fantasies of premiere directors in their own creator-owned lines under the Evil Angel umbrella.
"At Evil Angel I wanted to create a situation where the directors could be rewarded for the hard work they put into creating their product", says Stagliano, "at Evil Angel the directors make more money if their videos sell more. This is a great incentive for them to find new and better ways to make videos. Each one of our directors is unique in style and content, but similar in their commitment to create the best product possible."
Much of the Evil Angel library focuses on anal, rough sex, and artistic/sexual exploration. Evil Angel is also known for their high quality, long-running transsexual series’. Evil Angel’s high profile roster of directors has included Rocco Siffredi, Manuel Ferrara, Belladonna, Dana Vespoli, and Jonni Darkko. The Fashionistas and Buttman’s European Vacation are considered by many critics to be among the best adult movies of all time.
The story behind the name Evil Angel:
"The name Evil Angel comes from the fact that when I was stripping there was another guy in one of my shows named John. so this MC starting calling me Evil John to differentiate us. This was when I was doing Dracula and chains. At the same time I had a girl friend who called herself Angel when she did strip shows. She was a very nasty girl and I suggested that she call herself Evil Angel. She didn't, but I loved the name and wound up using it for my company."
